When you go for a countertop oven, you need to look at the features and see if they are a good fit for your kitchen. In this Breville BOV900BSS review, we’ll be discussing this countertop oven which is feature-packed and is a piece of work.
Also, this Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air model is an improvement over the Pro model. If you’re upgrading to the air model from the pro model, you need to know if its worth it. We discuss that and more in the full review below.
Design
The Breville BOV900BSS is made entirely out of stainless steel. The outside of the oven is brushed stainless steel which gives this a good finish. Finding plastic can be a good challenge to have. The SS used is pretty high-quality and sturdy guaranteeing you a long life.
The oven is not only durable but also scores in the looks department. If you’re going to place something on your countertop, it should be presentable, and this one checks all the boxes.
When you open the door, you can see that the rack can be height-adjusted to suits your cooking style. Also, when you open the front, there is a partial ejecting mechanism that brings the rack a little closer. This feature makes it easy to get the food in and out — pretty neat party trick, in our opinion.
The crumb tray is found at the bottom and can catch all the falling food. You don’t have to open the oven to remove to crumb tray. You can just slide it out with the help of the grip that’s present.
The LCD screen is the next thing you’ll like about this design. It is big enough to show you all the information you need. You can navigate the LCD screen option with the help of the rolling buttons making the experience streamlined.
Settings
The Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air comes with settings for bake, roast, broil, cookies, pizza, reheat, bagel, toast, warm, dehydrating, dough proofing, and air frying. You also have the defrosting setting as well which we’ve used more times than we’re willing to admit.
When compared with the Smart Oven Pro, the Air comes with three extra settings. You can’t find the settings for dehydrating, air frying, and dough proofing in the pro model.
In fact, you don’t even have to defrost a frozen item. You can just cook it right away by selecting the snowflake on the panel.
When you’re ready to cook all you’ve to is to select the setting and finalize the temperature. You can either set the temperature, or you can choose a number setting which can tell you how well you want the cooking done.
The heat distribution is different for different settings. If you go with toast, the oven will distribute 1800 watts from above and below to get it done. But in the case of broil, the oven just gives out 1500 watts. The oven blows hot air throughout the space to endure consistent cooking in the baking mode.
There are a lot of preset settings that come with the device. Though it can be useful to many, you’ll still want to use your own recipe. The good news is that you can customize each one of the settings.
The Smart Oven Air model is capable of remembering the settings until you turn this countertop oven off.
Features

Being an improvement to the Pro model, the Breville BOV900BSS has a lot of features. These features are not namesake but useful in real-life scenarios. These features also make sure that you’re not missing your standard oven.
Element IQ
The Element IQ is a feature that is unique to the Air model. There are six heating elements to distribute heat during cooking. With the help of this feature, you can move them to suit your cooking needs.
You can keep them in the place where you want for a specific recipe. You can then move them around for another recipe.
Each of the elements can adjust accordingly depending on the setting. This is done to give you uniform cooking for the setting you’ve chosen. Sometimes you need more heat from above and sometimes from below. This feature ensures just that.
Better Cooking Control
To give you more control over your cooking, the oven comes with 2-speed fans.
The regular fan speed is excellent for normal cooking. But when you need to cook a little faster, then super-speed fan can be handy. It sends more air more quickly ensuring faster cooking.
Capacity
This Breville BOV900BSS countertop oven’s capacity is one cubic foot, which is precisely 16″ x 13.5″ x 7″. You can fit in a 14lb turkey or a 12 cup muffin tray or around nine slices of toast.
Thanks to the multi-racking option, you can now more fit up to 4 racks inside at the same time. This is because of the spacey interior. You can also be sure that the heating elements won’t come in the way when cooking.
Breville Smart Oven Air Frying
You also get the air frying feature in the Breville BOV900BSS model.
In most countertop ovens, you cook food with the help of heating elements. But here the oven acts as an air heater. With maximum airflow, your food is cooked to the crisp.
Programmed Settings
Like we’ve mentioned above, the Breville BOV900BSS model comes with 13 settings.
You can choose any of these settings: toast, broil, bagel, slow cook, cookies, warm, reheat, pizza, roast, bake, air fry, dough proof, and dehydrate.
Having these settings could mean faster cooking whenever you have a recipe in mind. You don’t have to micro-manage everything. Just select the right setting, and you’re good to go.
Temperature Control
To prevent the overshoot of temperature, the Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven comes with PID temperature control.
You can set the temperature anywhere between 80F and 480F. This gives you precise control, and you can select specific temperatures for your unique recipes.
Is it better than the Pro Model?
The simple answer is yes.
The Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air comes with a lot of advantages over the pro model.
The first and the foremost difference you’ll notice is in size. The pro model comes with a volume of 0.8 cubic foot while the air model has a capacity of 1 cubic foot. Though it is a small increase in space, it could help you fit in a bigger turkey.
There are a total of six heating elements on the Air model as opposed to the five heating elements on the pro model. With an extra heating element, you can cook better and faster.
The crumb tray and the ceiling are well-polished for better heat deflection. You won’t find this in the pro model. You also don’t have to turn the light on manually which was a concern in the pro model.
Thanks to the increased volume, you can fit in 16-inch casserole dishes and regular quarter-sized baking sheets without any problems. The pro model stops at 14″ wide trays.
The air model comes with three settings namely dehydration, air frying, and dough proofing. You can’t find them in the pro model.
The electronic front on the pro model could suffer issues due to the heat that is produced. To counter that, there is an extra fan in the air model. This can prevent the overheating of the electronic front.
You can also sleep better with the Air model as it comes with a 2-year warranty as opposed to the 1-year warranty for the pro model.
These are some of the notable differences. If you’re upgrading from a pro to an air model, then we’re sure you can find a lot more.
Cleaning
The insides of the oven are non-stick enamel. The crumb tray is also made up of the same material. With non-stick enamel, using an oven cleaner is not a good idea.
Doing so can damage the finish, and you might lose the polish that helps in keeping the heat around.
Also, if you’re a regular cleaner, you can just use some soap and water to clean things up. Remove the crumb tray and scrub it soap and water to clean it.
The accessories are not the same non-stick material. But cleaning them is still easy. You can scrub them with soap and water. You can also use oven cleaners as you can’t impact the performance of the oven when cleaning the accessories.
Whenever you’re cleaning it is essential not to pour any water on top of the oven. You should also keep the power cord safe and dry.
Breville BOV900BSS Review – Bottomline
The Breville BOV900BSS countertop oven is a good fit in any kitchen. It has considerable improvements over its predecessor and makes up for a good upgrade as well.
With the given accessories, programmable settings, Element IQ feature, and more, the Breville BOV900BSS stands out as a smart oven. It can even be better than a standard oven in some cases.
If you’re looking for an oven that can make your life a lot easier, then going with the Breville BOV900BSS Smart Oven Air would be the smart thing to do.
