When it comes to gaming monitors, Asus has already proven that they can make excellent displays. The Asus VP28UQG is yet another gaming monitor from Asus that promises to be a good buy for gamers. The monitor is not only made with gamers in mind but also for those who’d like a crisp display as this is a 4K display.
In this Asus VP28UQG review, we analyze every element of this monitor and find the pros and cons of this new 4K display. How good is this display for everyday use? What about gaming performance? Is the monitor worth the money? Let’s find the answers to these questions in the full review below.
Design
The Asus VP28UQG model comes with a matte black finish which carries a bit of stealth look to it. The bezels around the screen are not as small as one would expect in a modern display. But they aren’t that big like in the iMacs. The bezels also have a clean look without any buttons on them. You only find the company logo on the bottom.
The monitor is not super slim but is also one of the lightest ones around. With a weight of around 10 lbs, you can easily move this one around. The thickness on the side is also not that much making it fit in pretty much any room.
There is a 5-way joystick controller on the back which can be used to navigate the OSD menu and options. You can easily find that on the back and the controller is also a bit intuitive making it easier to use over time. There are a couple of integrated speakers at the back. They give out a decent sound but it is not something that would your minds off.
The stand comes with a glossy finish and is made of aluminum. The bottom part of the stand is sturdy and holds goos against any wobbling. You can tilt the display front and back without any problem. There is no way to swivel, pivot, or even adjust the height of the display. This affects the ergonomics of the monitor to a certain extent.
Asus VP28UQG Performance
The Asus VP28UQG comes with a 28″ screen and a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels giving it an excellent pixel density of 157PPI. The resolution is one of the main selling points of this monitor. You get four times the number of pixels when compared to a full HD monitor and that’ll help you get crisper images and sharper text on the screen.
The monitor is very good for media consumption as well. The colors are vibrant and you can adjust the color profile to suit your needs. The viewing angles are not as good when compared to IPS displays. Even though this is a TN panel, it manages to produce a decent viewing angle and gives distortion-free pictures even at weird angles.
The monitor comes with a contrast ratio of 1000:1. This is s standard contrast ratio in a gaming monitor in this price point. Thanks to this contrast ratio, you get deep blacks and good grayscale performance. When increasing the brightness of the display, you do see the contrast ratio going down to about 900:1 and that’s more noticeable at maximum brightness of 300 nits.
Gaming on the Asus VP28UQG
The Asus VP28UQG comes with a refresh rate of 60Hz which is pretty good. The response time is around 1ms which is excellent for gaming performance. Thanks to this response time, you can’t see any ghosting or motion blur when playing games that have a lot of fast movements. The response time also reduces the flicker to a minimum amount.
If you’re a competitive gamer, then you’ll find the input lag of 10ms impressive. This is better than the lag you’ll find in most monitors and it does come in very handy. This can also be very useful when you playing some AAA titles as well. The monitor also comes with a bunch of features that cater to gamers.
Adaptive sync is another feature that improves your gaming experience by a mile. With adaptive sync, the monitor matches its refresh rate with the refresh rate of the GPU you are using. The monitor comes with an adaptive sync range of 40 to 60Hz. So within this range, you’ll get more fluid gaming experience.
Other Features
The Asus VP28UQG model comes with several eye care features. The flicker-free technology is the most notable feature of them all. It reduces the strain on your eyes and makes sure that your eyes don’t get hurt when you go for marathon gaming sessions.
The blue light filter is another neat feature that should be present in all monitors. The blue light emitting from the screen is harmful to your eyes, and with this blue light filter, the monitor controls the amount of blue light emitted. The monitor emits varying amounts of blue light based on the mode the monitor is set in. If you’re reading, you’ll have the least blue light emission and if you’re watching movies or other content, you’ll have the most blue light emission.
Connectivity
The Asus VP28UQG comes with typical connectivity options you’d expect in a gaming monitor. There is an HDMI 2.0 port and a Display Port 1.2 port which allows you to connect this monitor to both gaming consoles and desktop gaming PCs. There is also a headphone jack that is available if you need one. Accessing the ports is not a problem even if you choose to mount this display on the wall as they are facing downwards.
Bottomline
The Asus VP28UQG is a solid 4K gaming monitor that comes with all the essential features a gamer would expect. With a decent price tag, the monitor does a wonderful job when it comes to media consumption and everyday use. The gaming abilities of this display is impressive and gives you fluid gaming experience. If you’re looking for a reliable 4K gaming monitor that won’t break your bank, then this one is a good option.
